Chegg gives you the answer. Bylines makes sure you could have found it.
Chegg Study is a library of worked solutions. Bylines is a tutor for the material you were actually assigned — and it will not tell you the answer, on purpose.
| Chegg Study | Bylines | |
|---|---|---|
| Whose material | Chegg’s library: solutions to problems from textbooks they have covered. | Yours. Upload the lecture notes, the slide deck or the chapter you have to know, and that is what it teaches. |
| What happens when you are stuck | You read the worked solution, step by step. | It asks you something smaller, or points at where to look. The answer key is marked on the server and never sent to your browser. |
| Coverage | Excellent where the textbook is covered; nothing where it is not. | Whatever you can upload. Notes, .docx and .pptx — slide decks arrive with their speaker notes attached. |
| Checking your own work | Writing help is a separate subscription. | Included: facts checked against sources with the citation, claims with nothing behind them flagged, any term explained in place. |
| Academic integrity | Submitting a worked solution as your own is the risk students get caught on. | It never generates an answer for you to submit. Closer to being quizzed by a friend than to having the work done. |
| Price | $15.95 a month (chegg.com, checked September 2026). | Free includes 25 daily AI uses across study and writing tools. Pro removes that allowance, with safeguards for individual use. |
When Chegg is the better buy
If what you need is the worked solution to a specific problem from a textbook Chegg has covered, Chegg will get you there faster, and Bylines is deliberately refusing to do that. Bylines is for the case where you have to know the material afterwards.
What it costs beside the rest
